Maltese pilots proudly celebrate two significant milestones in 2023: the 20th anniversay of the Malta Maritime Pilots Co-operative Society Ltd. and two centuries of Maltese pilotage. Malta Maritime Pilots is split into 3 parts; The Malta Maritime Pilots Co-operative Society (2003-2023); Pilotage in Malta 1800-2002 and Memory Lane in Grand Harbour Part One: The Malta Maritime Pilots Co-operative Society (2003-2023) gives an in-depth view of the many activities of the Co-operative Society. Its’ crowning achievement is the Maritime Training Centre at Ħal Far which is highlighted as a premier maritime training hub offering over 50 courses up to the level of Master, solidifying its reputation as one of Europe’s best. Part Two: Pilotage in Malta chronicles the history of pilotage in Maltese harbors from 1800 to 2002, noting how British influence initially impacted mercantile activity. Pilotage regulations emerged during the Crimean War, leading to the establishment of pilot unions in the late 19th century. Pilots’ competencies were often tied to specific towns, with the construction of the breakwater significantly affecting navigation in the Grand Harbour. Despite challenges, pilots persevered through increased harbor usage leading up to World War II, seeking recognition for their vital role in maritime safety. Part Three: Memory Lane in Grand Harbour presents relevant historical photographs.
